Check out our in-depth video above talking about the models and variations of transfer cases.

We have a variety of models and variations of Transfer Cases for Dodge trucks built and ready to ship. No core required! And of course, each and every one is covered by our 1-year, unlimited mileage warranty.

There are some variations to be aware of, even within the same model of transfer case:

For diesel-powered and V10 gas-powered Dodge trucks:
V8 gas-powered trucks, regardless of automatic or manual transmission, would use the 23 spline variant for both the DLD or DHD.

1994-2002: These years came with an NP241 in either a “DLD” or “DHD” configuration, and either a 23 or 29 spline input.
The DLD was standard on the 2500 trucks and the DHD was standard on 3500 trucks and an option on the 2500s.
The quickest way to determine what you have is identifying a PTO cover on the DHD, which wasn’t available on the DLD.
For all variants, the 23 spline mates to the Automatic transmissions while a 29 spline would mate to Manual transmissions.

1997: These years also came with the NP241 in the DLD, but DHDs were unique to this model year. This is the ultimate upgrade to early cases, being the first year they upgraded to the much larger output shaft with the 1-piece tail housing, and the only year the speedometer provision was included with those improvements.
Both still come in 23 or 29 spline inputs.

Please also note that the 94-97 models, both DLD and DHD, have a speedometer provision in the transfer case tail housing while the 98-02 trucks have their speedometer provisions are in the rear axle.

2003+: These years came with either an NP271 or NP273 with 23 or 29 spline input.
The NP271 is a manually-shifted model while the NP273 is an electronically operated shift on the fly.
The 2003 and early 04 models had slight variations from the late 2004 and up models, including the cam stub for the electronic shift motor being a stub with two flat sides, 180 degrees out from each other.

*Late 2004 is defined by your truck’s build date being after May of 2004.
If you have a 2004 truck, please check your VIN if you’re unsure of the build date, or give us a call and we’ll be happy to help.

Late 2004 & 2005+: The late ’04 trucks will have a ‘star’ shaped cam stub for the electronic shift motor. You will be able to see this, vs the previous 2 flat sided stub, by pulling your electronic shift motor.
Also note that all the 2005+ 47/48RE trucks from the factory used a 23 spline transfer case input, but, when they switched to the 68RFE they also switched the 29 spline transfer case input shaft.

Aside from the 68RFE notead above, the NP271 and NP273 have the same 23 or 29 input shaft variations of the NP241.
